University of Twente Scholarship 2027 in Netherlands | Funded

Introduction

The University of Twente Scholarship 2027 supports high-achieving international students pursuing an MSc in the Netherlands. Known as UTS, it is intended for eligible applicants from outside the European Union and European Economic Area. The university plans to award up to 50 scholarships for master’s programmes beginning in September 2027. This is a partially funded scholarship, so recipients must arrange funding for costs beyond their award.

Scholarship Overview

UTS awards range from €3,000 to €22,000 for one year. Selection focuses on academic excellence, with applicants expected to be among the top 5% to 10% of their graduating class at their home university. Applying for admission and applying for the scholarship are separate processes. Candidates must first obtain admission to an eligible University of Twente master’s programme before submitting their scholarship application.

Host Country

The scholarship supports study in the Netherlands, where the University of Twente is located in Enschede. Recipients will pursue their eligible master’s programme at the university. Applicants who need a visa must satisfy the requirements for entering the Netherlands. Financial planning should also account for academic and living expenses that the scholarship does not cover.

Host Institution or Organization

The University of Twente is a public technical university with an academic environment that includes research, entrepreneurship, and industry collaboration. Its educational opportunities extend across engineering, technology, business, health, and social sciences. Students can access advanced research facilities and interdisciplinary learning opportunities. The scholarship supports the university’s aim of attracting academically strong international students.

Degree Level

This opportunity is for eligible master’s degree programmes leading to an MSc, with study starting in September 2027. Both the chosen programme and the applicant must satisfy the scholarship conditions. Pre-master’s programmes are excluded from UTS funding. Master’s programmes offered by the Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation, known as ITC, are also excluded.

Scholarship Benefits

Recipients receive between €3,000 and €22,000 for one year and may decide how to allocate the money. It can contribute toward tuition, living expenses, or other study-related costs. The award does not cover every expense, and students remain responsible for financing the balance. Applicants should therefore treat UTS as financial assistance rather than a fully funded study package.

Students taking a two-year master’s programme may qualify for a second-year UTS award equal to their first-year amount. Continued funding requires an average grade of 7 out of 10. Students must also complete at least 50% of their European Credits by the end of the third quartile of the first year. The additional award is conditional on meeting these academic requirements.

The Kipaji Scholarship offers a separate possibility for additional support of up to €12,000. It is available only to UTS recipients applying for eligible programmes starting in September 2027. Kipaji has its own eligibility conditions, which applicants must also satisfy. Receiving UTS should therefore not be treated as an automatic entitlement to Kipaji funding.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must have an academic admission letter and provisional acceptance into an eligible University of Twente master’s programme. They must also have a student number and rank within the top 5% to 10% of their graduating class. Candidates must be ineligible for a Dutch study loan and meet any applicable visa requirements. Both the overall academic profile and the stated administrative conditions matter.

The English-language thresholds are Academic IELTS 6.5 overall or TOEFL iBT 90 overall. Applicants must additionally achieve at least 6.0 in IELTS speaking or 20 in TOEFL iBT speaking. Meeting the total score alone does not remove the speaking-score condition. Candidates should check both figures when reviewing their test results.

EU and EEA applicants, Dutch nationals, and current University of Twente students cannot apply. Applicants must not have previously graduated from a University of Twente undergraduate or graduate programme. Students paying statutory tuition fees are also excluded. These restrictions apply alongside the programme exclusions described above.

Required Documents

An academic admission letter is necessary before proceeding with the scholarship application. The application process accepts a conditional or unconditional admission letter. Candidates must also have their University of Twente student number available when applying. They should retain these details and follow the university’s application instructions carefully.

Application Process

Begin by applying for an eligible master’s programme through the University of Twente’s official website. Allow time for the admission process, as applicants may wait up to eight weeks for a result. After receiving a conditional or unconditional admission letter, use your student number to apply separately for UTS. Complete the scholarship application accurately and review all instructions before submitting it through the university’s scholarship portal.

Important Dates and Deadline

The scholarship application opens on 15 October 2026 at 9:00 CET. The submission deadline is 1 April 2027 at 16:00 CET. Scholarship results are expected during the first week of May 2027. The eligible master’s programmes begin in September 2027.

Tips for Applicants

As general preparation advice, work backward from the scholarship deadline and allow enough time for the separate admission decision. Convert the stated CET deadline into your local time rather than relying on the calendar date alone. Keep your admission correspondence, student number, and application details organized. A final accuracy check can help identify missing information or inconsistencies before submission.

How to Prepare a Strong Application

As general guidance, choose a programme that clearly connects with your academic background and future study interests. Where the application invites discussion of achievements, use specific examples rather than broad claims about your abilities. If explanatory statements are requested, keep them focused, factual, and consistent with your academic record. Separately, prepare a realistic budget so you understand how you would finance expenses beyond the scholarship.
